Bangkok's new international and domestic airport. Suvarnabhumi (pronounced su-wan-na-poom) means "Golden Land" and was the name conferred by His Majesty the King of Thailand at an auspicious foundation stone laying ceremony on January 19, 2002. Located on an 8,000-acre (20,000 rais) sit in Samut Prakarn province, about 25 kilometers east of Bangkok, Suvarnabhumi airport and a hub for travel in South-East Asia. Suvarnabhumi has two parallel runways - 4,000m and 3,700m long - already in place and able to support a total capacity of 76 flights per hour. Both domestic and international flights will share the terminal but will be assigned different parts of the concourse. The initial phase of construction will allow for 45 million passengers per year, while further expansion phases will see the addition of two more runways enabling 100 million upon full development. There are 120 aircraft parking days, 10 of which can accommodate the new giant of the skies - the Airbus A380.
